Combe Valley Visitor Centre Container

Shipping Container Conversion Projects

Functional, eye-catching and spacious, this shipping visitor centre container conversion comprises of three 40ft containers providing a multifunctional space for a small café, office, storeroom and public toilets. There is also space for displays, meetings and community activities. Combe Valley Visitor Centre in Combe Valley Countryside Park, Hastings, was installed earlier this year.

This container conversion was carefully designed to minimise energy use, conserve water and actively demonstrate best practice in sustainable design. It is also practical, functional and robust in this remote parkland location. For more visitor centre container ideas, take a look at our brochure.

In order to minimise the environmental impact and infrastructure costs, a minimal concrete substructure has been used (possible because of the inherent integrity of the container), along with the installation of a septic tank. Surface water from the roof will be collected to water the kitchen garden. Operationally, the thermal efficiency and air tightness will ensure the centre retains its low carbon credentials.

The visitor centre container complex will remain in its current location for an initial site activation period before moving further into the park where it will become a hub for site conservation and recreational activities.

“The provision of a new visitor hub at Combe Valley Countryside Park is a really exciting project for the Countryside Park. We are using recycled shipping containers to be as sustainable as possible for our building.”
Cllr Dawn Poole, Hastings Borough Council’s lead member for leisure and amenities and chair of the Combe Valley Countryside Park Board.
